I started this newsletter way back in the spring of 2018, not long after my 44th birthday, and I gotta say, that feels like ages ago. I say that, because I’m feeling reflective. Today is my birthday. I’m 51.

Seven is a long time in internet years, and perhaps even longer in terms of publishing an independent newsletter. Back then, I was a pioneer, you could say, one of the first to adopt “stack” technology, which gives people the ability to publish a blog post and send an email blast at the same time while also handling all the credit and debit card numbers.

Since 2018, well, you already know. There are now more newsletters than anyone can possibly read, and there are more journalists and writers trying to scratch out a living. And there seems to be no limit to that trend, as mainstream media continues to bleed revenues and rightwing politics continues to choke the talented people who remain.

But through it all, I have been lucky. So very lucky. No matter what has happened, I have been blessed with about 1,100 subscribers, give or take a dozen, who want to pay me good money to hear what I have to say about democracy and the common good. It still amazes me!

That’s the feeling I have today – gratitude for your support, for your care, but mostly for your belief in what one man can do. It may not be much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s a lot to me. Thank you.

That said, the bills keep coming! If you are not currently a paying subscriber to the Editorial Board, perhaps the occasion of my 51st birthday will inspire you to take the plunge and join us. If you are already a paying subscriber, THANK YOU! The tip jar is always open!
