I’m not going to sugar-coat this. It’s going to be very hard to stop the president and the Senate Republicans from replacing Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday. It might be impossible, in fact, because Mitch McConnell holds all the cards. (Yes, he’s a hypocrite; more on that another time.) The more important question might be this: how will the Democrats respond to defeat? Will they change the rules of Washington so politics is fairer? Or will they find a quiet place to lick their wounds? I could be wrong, but my sense is even that squish Chuck Schumer is preparing to go to war.
