Dear friends,

I’m writing today to ask for help.

You may not know that at the same time I’ve been publishing this newsletter for normal people in plain English, I held down a steady day job. That job was a good job. It provided flexible hours, relatively low stress and pretty good benefits. That job, however, has come to an end. I must turn the page.

I don’t know what the future holds (who does, right?). It will most likely entail finding another steady day job. But this newsletter has a good deal of promise—if I can persuade enough people to chip in.

Before I get to the ask, I have to explain how things work.

There are those who “sign up.” Then there are those who “subscribe.” One is free. The other requires a small fee. Since launching the Editorial Board in 2018, nearly 2,000 have signed up free (I started from zero). Also since then, about 300 people have become dues-paying members of the Editorial Board.

To those 300 people, I say thank you. Thank you so much. Not only have you given me your investment and blessing. You have allowed me the freedom to say things I didn’t know I had in me to say. No matter what happens in the coming days and weeks, I will always be grateful for that. Again thank you!

To those 2,000 or so people who read on occasion but don’t contribute—I say thank you again, for the same reasons, but also because just signing up means you see something that you value, and that means so much to me—to every writer. Just ask them. The simple gift of attention is priceless.

But this is labor. It has value. And now that I don’t have a steady day job (for now), I must ask for those who have not become members of the Board to please become a member today. If everyone on my list sent $60 for a year of reading the Board, a new day job would be pointless. It would be enough.

I don’t expect that though. I don’t expect anything! But I do hope non-subscribers will take a moment to think about what the Editorial Board means to them, and chip in. You don’t have to commit to a year. Choose the monthly plan if you wish. You can cancel any time. But even that will be appreciated. A little here and a little there is all I need to get my family and me through this uncertain time. Thank you!

I apologize for this long letter. I promise to get back to politics.
